Podi Idli Recipe | How to make Podi Idli | South Indian Recipe

What is Podi Idli?

Idli sautéed in podi is podi idli. Podi is a condiment from the South Indian cuisine which is prepared using lentils, red chilies, sesame seeds, etc and served with idli, dosa, uttapam, etc. I keep my podi coarse and do not make a fine powder. When soft idlis are coated and cooked with podi, what you get is podi idli which is spicy, has a crunchy exterior and soft and spongy idli inside. Podi idli is a healthy breakfast recipe. Best breakfast recipes are the ones which are easy breakfast recipes as well as quick breakfast recipes. And this one certainly falls into that category. Also, idli is a perfect tiffin recipe for kids and is also a diet breakfast. This is such a perfect weekday breakfast recipe, with some leftover idli in the fridge and podi in the pantry, you can make idli in less than 5 minutes.

Let’s talk about the ingredients for Podi Idli Recipe

Podi idli is a combination of idli and podi. And the combining agent is ghee/clarified butter. This is a very simple recipe for idli. Generally, many ingredients are used to temper idli but I have used only ghee. This way the flavor of podi gets enhanced. Just as the recipe for podi idli varies, the recipe for podi also varies. I have followed this recipe to make the podi. So to sum up, idli needs:

Idli: I have prepared mini idli following this recipe to make idli. You can use proper idli, as a whole or cut into quarters.

Podi: The podi used by me is neither too fine nor too hot. Recipe link is given above.

Ghee: The only ingredient other than the ones mentioned above is ghee. It helps to podi to get coated on the idli properly.

Hi! I am CA Vini Mehta. A Chartered Accountant by profession, a food blogger by passion! First of all, I would like to thank you for stopping by at Viniscookbook, I hope you have a good time. Here, yo...u will find the recipes which have been tried, at times re-tried in my kitchen and relished on the dining table. I am mother of two kids and the wife of a person with a high and selective taste sense, so basically anything, before finding its place on the blog, has many levels to cross and clear. This journey started a couple of years back. Before that I was making the most usual kind of food. The only experiment used to be asking my mother how to make something new or different☺. Then, one day, I tried a recipe for butter cookies. And they did not get to go in the container as they were over before I could store them. That day I was introduced to the joy of experimenting with recipes. And I loved everything else that followed especially garnishing and photographing food. I am still not well versed with the photography dos and don’ts but I love to experiment and learn, be it photography or cooking. Hope you too enjoy this journey as much as I do☺! Stay healthy, stay tuned!.
