is a thin crepe made up of gram flour sandwiched between bread slices, flavoured with coriander chutney and tomato ketch up.
Besan cheela sandwich is a good option for breakfast/tiffin/tea-time snack/sudden hunger pranks. It is ready in no time and doesn’t call for any special ingredients. Since the cheela is converted into a sandwich it is quite filling too.
I love gram flour preparation. Being born, brought up and married in Rajasthan, frankly I didn’t have much choice with that because gram flour is used a lot in Rajasthani cuisine. Besan Cheela is one of my favourite on the go snack. But my daughter, Amy, never liked it. However, when I made besan cheela sandwich, she was happy. Kids… who says are difficult to please!
1. Prepare batter for cheela : In a bowl mix 1½ cup gram flour, salt to taste, 1 tsp red chilli powder, ½ tsp ginger garlic paste, ¼ tsp turmeric powder. Add 1 cup water to making a runny batter. Leave the batter to rest for 10 minutes.
2. Prepare besan cheela : Grease a non stick pan. Spread ladle full batter to make a thin cheela.
3. Cook besan cheela : Once bubbles appear on the surface, flip the cheela and cook from the other side too. Drizzle few drops of oil. Cook till both the sides are golden brown.
4. Prepare sandwich : Cut besan cheela into 4 portions. Take 2 bread slices. Spread tomato ketch up on one and coriander chutney on another. Arrange portions of besan cheela on the bread slice. Cover with another bread slice.
5. Bon appétit : Serve besan cheela sandwich with a cup of tea.
